Dale Earnhardt had trouble on the very first lap he hit the wall coming off the first corner he made it back to the pits.
After complaining about seeing double Earnhardt was taken from his car to the infield care center. He was later taken to a local hospital and his car owner Richard Childress said he was alert but groggy.
South Boston's Jeff Burton was having another strong run lead the race after about 60 laps of the event.
Jeff Gordon chasing the Winston Miller overcame some handling problems to lead the race with about 285 laps left to go.
Then on lap 135 Robby Gordon drifts up the track and hits Mike Skinner turning him to the inside of the track where he hit the wall bringing out the caution.
Bill Elliott was running strong and Million Dollar Bill was leading the race at the halfway mark.
Mark Martin, The Winston Cup Points leader, passes Terry Labonte to take over the sixth position with 121 laps to go.
Gordon was the leader with 52 laps to go and after he and Burton touch on the next to last lap he pulls away to win the Mountain Dew Southern 500 and a million Dollars.
