((On the shores of Haiti, despair for hundreds feared dead in a ferry boat
disaster.
It could be the one of the worst maritime accident in decades.
Perhaps 800 people were crammed on the ferry boat carrying passengers from a
smaller island to Haiti's mainland.
Then, when passengers were disembarking, something went terribly wrong.
People moved to one side, it listed and sank.
Thousands of Haitians cried in grief as divers assigned to a U-N peacekeeping
force searched for survivors.
U-S Coast Guard helicopters hovered over the spot where the ferryboat
apparently sank.
The brand new ship had only been in service for 15 days, but apparently had no
life jackets.
Survivors also said doors were bolted shut.
That prevented many passengers from escaping.
Some people got to safety, but others were locked inside.
Haiti's boats and buses are known worldwide for piling on passengers,
regardless of the dangers.
It's apparently a danger many people in this poorest of countries are willing
to take.
