Hundreds of people may have drowned near Haiti today when a ferry
overturned and sank.
Up to 800 people may have crammed into the ship that was only supposed to
hold 260 people.
Bolted doors trapped passengers, and there were no life jackets.
Rescue workers have called it a night in the two day search for a missing

aboard- overturned and sank.
Tonight the search goes on for hundreds believed trapped inside.

It could be the one of the worst maritime accident in decades.
Perhaps 800 people were crammed on the ferry boat carrying passengers from a
smaller island to Haiti's mainland.
Then, when passengers were disembarking, something went terribly wrong.
People moved to one side, it listed and sank.
Thousands of Haitians cried in grief as divers assigned to a U-N peacekeeping
force searched for survivors.
U-S Coast Guard helicopters hovered over the spot where the ferryboat
The brand new ship had only been in service for 15 days, but apparently had no
Survivors also said doors were bolted shut.
That prevented many passengers from escaping.
Some people got to safety, but others were locked inside.
Haiti's boats and buses are known worldwide for piling on passengers,
regardless of the dangers.
It's apparently a danger many people in this poorest of countries are willing

After two days of searching, still no sign of a missing fisherman at
Rescue workers called off the search at dark tonight.
53-year old Cecil Donald Short is presumed to have drowned in the reservoir.
His empty boat was discovered yesterday morning.
Today, the only clue to his disappearance was a pack of cigarettes found
floating near the dam.

Short was seen fishing in several places Saturday morning, so rescue workers
have a large search area to cover.
The man who wants to build a slaughterhouse in Botetourt county was dealt a
major blow tonight.
The county planning commission voted three to one against the plan.

A controversial hog farm is not longer coming to Pittsylvania County.
A lawyer for the G-I-S company in North Carolina sent a letter to local
saying it will no longer locate on there.
But county administrator George Supensky says he's heard nothing from G-I-S.
It was more than a month ago that the County supervisors asked the company
not to move into the area.
Local residents said the hogs would pollute the area,
The lawyer for G-I-S says that's not true.
A Franklin County judge believes three teenage girls are telling the truth
about being sexually assaulted by a former 4-H camp instructor.
Judge B-A Davis convicted 23-year old Joseph Doyle of offenses against three
girls ages 13, 15 and 16.
The girls were at Smith Mountain Lake 4-H camp last summer.
The teens allege Doyle fondled their breasts during canoeing and swimming
activities at the camp.
Judge Davis reduced the charges to lesser offenses and dropped one felony
Doyle plead not guilty to the charges and maintains he's innocent.
He'll be sentenced later.
A warning goes out about possible carbon monoxide leaks in some furnaces
installed before 1990.
Lennox Industries says it's urgent that owners have their furnaces checked
before cold weather arrives.

Police say around nine tonight the driver of this tractor trailer lost
control of his truck after he ran over a curb on the 27-hundred block of

The driver was taken to the hospital, but his injuries are NOT believed to
be life threatening.

It took ten police officers, a dog and some chemical spray to subdue a
Lynchburg man suspected of assaulting his mother this morning.
Police were called to 108 Hillside Court around 11:30 after a neighbor saw a
woman being assaulted outside the building.
Authorities say 28-year old Raymond Andrew Farmer ran inside when officers
arrived and refused to submit to arrest.
It took police about a half hour to get him subdued and handcuffed.

It was back to the drawing board for students and teachers at a Roanoke
County high school today.
Cave Spring High School had a rocky first two weeks.
A computerized scheduling program crashed two days before classes began, and

one year-old Prepaid Education Program.
And the already popular program has even more benefits this time around.
The 1997 General Assembly voted to make the prepaid tuition contracts exempt
from state income taxes.
They were already federally exempt.
