women's shelter--but the results are being kept quiet.
And one of the first female cadets at V-M-I has been suspended after a
confrontation with an upperclassman. We will have details.

squeeze this weekend, the doctors say Steve Young can play this weekend,
and big league hall of famer Richie Ashburn, the former Phillie, is dead at
the age of 70.

A female rat is sent home from VMI for striking an upperclassman.
The incident happened during normal rat-line drills.
VMI spokesman Mike Strickler says violence is not tolerated at the school.

But he allows this is not the first case of a freshman hitting an

In Gilmore's statement, he says he favors minority RECRUITMENT to colleges
-- but colorblind decisions on who's admitted.
Gilmore's ticketmate, Republican Mark Earley takes a different view.
Attorney General candidate Earley says colleges MAY use race and gender as a
factor in admissions, but he's against quotas.
That's where Democrat Don Beyer is on the issue.
State policy allows colleges to use race as one of many factors considered
to achieve a diversified student body.
Diversity of school choice is also a hot button issue for the candidates.
Virginia Democrats today blasted Republicans for even considering vouchers.
That means public tax dollars going to pay private school tuitions.

Cranwell says his estimate is just a starting point.
It comes from the 71-thousand Virginia students currently enrolled in
private schools -- who would each get a voucher of around 23- hundred dollars

In Dick Cranwell's race for the House, Republican Al Bedrosian takes the
Gilmore view: vouchers should be considered.
An investigation into reports of sexual harassment at Covington's battered
women's shelter is apparently over.
But the results may never be known....

Six months ago, Melanie White felt she'd waited long enough for answers, and
went public with allegations that a member of the SafeHome shelter board
sexually harassed her, at her home, and as she worked here at the shelter....
She also said a shelter resident was romantically pursued by another board
Back then, an attorney for the board said in internal investigation into the
alleged incidents was underway.
A few months later a board member told us the investigation was over, but
she didn't know the results.
Now, the board isn't saying anything.
We tried to ask board chairman Linda Simmons what was going on...

Former Virginia Attorney General candidate Gil Davis is no longer
representing Paula Jones in HER sexual harassment claim.
A federal judge is allowing Davis and another lawyer to withdraw from Jones'
lawsuit against President Clinton.
The attorneys had said in papers filed yesterday they have "fundamental
differences of opinion" with Jones about how the case should proceed.
Reportedly Davis and the other attorney supported a settlement plan which
Also today the judge in Little Rock, Arkansas, is insisting that the case
stay on course for a trial next May.
A teacher's aide at Auburn High School in Montgomery County is accused of
having consensual sex with a 13- year old female student.
25- year old John Breedlove of Roanoke was arraigned in Montgomery County
General District Court today.
Sheriffs officials say the incident happened at the school last week while
Breedlove was working.
If convicted-- Breedlove faces up to 10- years in prison.

Search teams are calling in reinforcements in the search for a missing
fisherman in the reservoir at Carvin's Cove in Botetourt County.
Rescue workers found an empty fishing boat Sunday morning, but have still not
found any trace of 53-year old Cecil Donald Short.
Virginia Game Department officials say if the body is not recovered by the
time the search ends tonight, a sonar device will be brought in from Richmond
But for now they're using dogs and scuba divers.

Short's family is staying at the site until they hear some word from search
Family members say they can't rest until they know what happened to Short.

Plans to relocate a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Giles County
continue to draw criticism.

The Board of Supervisors is planning to appeal the location decided upon by
the National Park and U-S Forest Service.
Government officials want to reroute the trail between Angels Rest and
Peters Mountain-- to establish a permanent location with a protected corridor.

community-- where much of the land has been owned for generations.

Forest officials say they're trying to set a date to meet with residents and
discuss their concerns.
Re-routing the trail is expected to cost about 679- thousand dollars.
Shepherd's Auto Supply says it WILL be open for business tomorrow.
The Roanoke auto parts store closed abruptly this week, leaving customers

Former Hokie Jim Druckenmiller may not for a another day or so if he will
start, play or ride the bench in this Sunday's game against the Saints.
Earlier today, first stringer Steve Young was given the clearance by his
doctors to play this week after sitting out last Sunday with his third
concussion in the last 11 months.

player and broadcaster Richie Ashburn was found dead this morning.
The Hall of Fame centerfielder played for the Phillies from 1948 to
1959. He was a broadcaster for the team for the last 35 years.
Ashburn is also a two-time batting champion had for his career he hit .308 in
15 big-league seasons.
Richie Ashburn was 70.
