A package with the words "letter bomb" written on it caused quite a scare at a local UPS plant.
A company manager called police after another employee found it.

The worker then took the package to Roanoke City police waiting outside who called in state police bomb technicians.
They blew up the package and it DID NOT have explosives in it.
It appears the package was sent from out of state.
Roanoke City police are continuing to investigate.

A 25-year old memo is causing some problems for John Hager, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor.

In 1972, Hager was working for American Tobacco and he wrote about ways to raise the nicotine levels in cigarettes.
The memo came up again during Hager's pretrial testimony this summer in a Pennsylvania lawsuit against cigarette makers.
Hager says the memo answered a theoretical question.
He also says that American Tobacco didn't control nicotine levels in its products.

Police stopped him and he refused to sign the ticket.
He was taken to jail, but decided to pay the 95 dollar fine to avoid an overnight stay.

In just over a month, The Roanoke Express will open its 1997-98 East Coast Hockey League Season.

Today at the Roanoke Civic Center the Express held Hockey-Fest 97 its first annual Roller Hockey tournament.
Some of the Express players were on hand for autographs and skating tips for the kids.
The event's main purpose is to promote the Express and hockey in general.

Sixteen dogs and their owners competed today for the title of Top Dog in this year's frisbee world championships.
It's an annual event where dog lovers and their "best friends" are judged on showmanship, leaping ability, degree of difficulty and execution.
Melissa Heeter and her dog Ariel Asah of Georgia were the champions of the event.
