It appears Former Massachusetts governor William Weld is giving up the fight
to become U-S ambassador to Mexico.
A source says he will formally announce his withdrawal this afternoon.
Senator Jesse Helms refused to grant his nomination at a hearing before the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Helms said Weld was not suited to be ambassador to a country where drug
trafficking is a problem because Weld advocates the medical use of marijuana.
Weld resigned as Governor of Massachusetts this summer.
