The IRS went after Katherine Hicks's new husband for back taxes owed by her ex-husband. She had to get divorced from her new husband in order to sort out problems he had nothing to do with.
Then there's Tom Savage a contractor who, despite exoneration by the justice department, had to turn over 50-thousand dollars he didn't owe just to get tax collectors off his back.

Horror stories like these were the centerpiece of a second day of hearings as congress considers overhauling the troubled Internal Revenue Service. For its part.. the I.R.S. is under increasing pressure to collect about 90 billion dollars in delinquent back taxes from last year alone. But at issue on the hill was the nature of the collection process:

Police pinpointed the man who allegedly shot a Danville police officer last November, but he will never stand trial.

29-year old Marlowe Andre Farmer was charged with attempted murder for apparently shooting and injuring Officer Dennis Haley during a drug raid.
A federal jury convicted Farmer on drug charges after also hearing evidence of the shooting.
Now Commonwealth's Attorney Bill Fuller says there's no point presenting the same evidence again in circuit court.
Fuller says a federal judge will consider the shooting when he sentences Farmer next month.

23-year old Andre Eugene Evans faces first degree and capital murder charges, along with two counts of using a firearm to commit a felony.
He allegedly shot Timothy Ray Robinson and Lorin Tyler Murphy near the intersection of South and Franklin Streets.
Witnesses say they were arguing about tennis shoes.
Timothy Robinson's cousin heard the shots, but did not realized what had happened until a neighbor called for help.

Back in June, a Charlottesville company called D-and-R Development unveiled plans to build "The Roanoke Ice Park" downtown.
Since then, construction of a competing rink in Roanoke, called "The Ice Palace" has already begun.
But as Len Besthoff reports, the group involved in the first project hopes to have another draw to its facility... a 12 screen movie theater.

The Roanoke Express' head coach and director of hockey operations Frank Anzalone announced the acquisition of Jeff Scharf (SKARF) from the Charlotte Checkers today.
Scharf is a 20 year old center.
He's 6 feet one and weighs 190 pounds.

Another big trade in the NBA last night as the Orlando Magic unloaded troubled guard Dennis Scott.

Scott averaged 15 points, three rebounds, and 2 assists in seven seasons with the Magic, but he has been threatening to skip training camp.
In return for Scott the Magic gets two good players in veteran Derek Harper and forward Ed O'Bannon.
