Police say truck driver Carol Reece Brown fell asleep at the wheel and drove off the road, smashing into the Glenvar Heights Road underpass.
He died at the scene.
Department of Motor Vehicle statistics for the state of Virginia show that there were 72 fatal accidents last year involving tractor trailors.
There were also 72 incidents of truckers falling asleep at the wheel.
