A Department of Agriculture spokeswoman says beef contaminated with E. coli (ee KOH'-ly) turned up in an Emporia, Virginia supermarket.

But BeefAmerica says it doesn't believe the plant is the source of the contamination.
Meat from the plant is not under recall. No illnesses have been reported from the tainted beef.

A man driving a log truck along route 501 in Halifax County died after he hit a guardrail and flipped over, landing on top of a van.

The accident happened around 9-30 this morning just south of Brookneal.
The driver of the truck was 41-year-old Robin Dennis Lowe.
Two people were in the van that was hit; they were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.
There is no word on their condition.
Part of Route 501 was blocked for several hours as police worked to remove both vehicles.
The accident is still under investigation.

Williamson pledged to keep the century old company locally owned and headquartered.

A new cigar has Cuban cigar makers fuming.

The U.S. General Cigar Company launched its New Cohiba cigar in New York.
The company got U.S. rights to the name, even though Cuba has produced Cohiba cigars since 1966.
Cuban officials are accusing the U.S. company of exploiting Cuba's inability to enter the U.S. market because of the trade embargo.
The New Cohiba is made from tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.
Some who sampled the cigar today said it's better than the cuban.

The United States made a run for it on the final day but Europe has retained the Ryder Cup.

Europe led by five points going into the final 12 singles matches. The Europeans clinched at least a tie when Berhnard Langer parred the seventh hole to beat Brad Faxon two and one.
Europe wins it 14 and a half to 13 and a half but on the final day the United States won seven singles matches to make it close.

Meantime, Mark McGwire hit home run number 58 today and while he failed to catch Roger Maris he did tie the mark set in 1932 by Jimmie Foxx and equalled in 1938 by Hank Greenberg for homers hit by a righty.

Frank Thomas wins the American League batting title with a 347 average.

There are a few new road projects that may slow down your commute tomorrow.
To help you dodge the delays here's this week's edition of Road Report.

((Most of the on-going construction projects this week are in Roanoke and Roanoke County.
First up, on Dale Avenue, VDOT says construction will soon start on Tinker Bridge.
Four lane of Traffic will be squeezed down to 2-- one lane in each direction, so expect delays.
Also, the Bridge Street bridge in Southwest Roanoke is scheduled to be closed tomorrow.
There is no detour here-- so you'll need to find another route.
Construction along U-S 220 continues in Roanoke County.
A stretch of the highway about two miles north of the Franklin County line is narrowed down to one lane in both directions.
Give yourself extra time if you're headed to the race tomorrow.
The only other new construction project around the region is in Botetourt County. take pinnacle board
Resurfacing along U-S Route 11 will get underway soon near Troutville.
It'll be slow goings....as you'll have to merge down to one lane.

A gardener in Romania has a big secret... she's not talking, but it's kind of hard to miss.

It's a cucumber so big, she had to dig a hole underneath it to give it more room to grow, and it's still growing, several inches each day.
This giant vegetable is now more than six feet long, and one foot in diameter.
The owner is a retired doctor... She doesn't mind letting reporters into her garden to measure the cucumber's progress, but she won't reveal her gardening secrets. She's planning to sell the seeds, and hopes to garden her way into the Guiness Book of World Records.
