The Yokohama Tire Plant in Salem is about to get a lot bigger.
Governor Allen landed a deal on his East Asian trade mission for a 28-
million- dollar expansion at what's now a truck tire plant.
The deal will enable Yokahama to begin manufacturing high- performance
radial tires for cars and R-V's.
Installing the new production line is expected to begin next July, and
finish by early 19-99.
The deal also means Salem will get a new Yokohama distribution center... and
an unspecified number of new jobs.
A quick- thinking neighbor with a garden hose is being credited with helping
to save a trailer home from burning up this morning in Lynchburg.
Firefighters were called to lot 209 at the Terry Court trailer park around
The fire had started in the living room of the mobile home, but a nearby
resident using a hose kept it contained until crews could arrive.
The family renting the trailer had just left a half hour earlier.
Fire marshal John Jennings says an electrical short in a curling iron caught
a chair on fire.
The blaze then spread to the contents of the living room.
The rest of the trailer suffered smoke and water damage.
The cause of that massive chemical fire in Smyth County nearly two months
ago may never be determined.
Officials say the intensity of the fire is working against investigators.
As Teresa Hamilton reports-- the fire is raising other questions, as well.
