The fire is in one building where an apartment tops a store called The Clothes Rack.
Firefighters remain on the scene--there are no reports of injuries so far.
Fire officials believe the fire began on a sofa that was placed outside.
They say heavy traffic congestion from the Virginia Tech football game made the scene more difficult to manage.

Police say Wanda Golden of Danville braked suddenly on Route 41 to avoid hitting a car in front of her.
She swerved into the oncoming lane, hitting another vehicle.
Golden and the other driver, Phyllis Hazelwood, are being treated and released from the hospital.

It's designed with doors that heat up.
The house also fills up with smoke-- all in an effort to teach children what it feels like to be in a real fire.

The Hokies looked strong in the first quarter as Ken Oxendine caps a 71 yard drive with the dive to make it 7 to nothing Hokies.
In the second quarter with the Hokies up 10 to nothing Dustin Cohen returns the blocked Tech punt three yards for the score to bring the Redhawks within three.
Miami was leading 14 to 10 but Oxendine carries the ball three yards for the score to give the Hokies a 17 to 14 halftime lead.
The second half would prove costly for Tech as Oxendine fumbles and the Redhawks recover the ball with good field position at the Tech 28.
Four plays later Travis Prentice takes it in from 8 yards out and the Redhawks took the 21 to 17 lead.
The Miami defense kept Al Clark on SUPER=36-Miami, Ohio/24/Virginia
Tech/17/;the ground late in the game and The Redhawks pull off the upset 24 to 17 spoiling the Hokies homecoming.
