Christy Harden was there the night Garnett "GP" Johnson was burned alive and
decapitated.
The two, and some friends, had been celebrating her 21st birthday before the
night got out of hand.
At first, Harden told police her close friend, Emmett Cressell Junior-- was
not involved.
However, later said Cressell helped carry Johnson's body outside shortly
before he was killed.
But Cressell's attorney says the fact his client was one of the first to
report the crime proves he wasn't involved, although Harden testified, Cressell
smelled of gasoline.

as a suspect.

the river can't enjoy it.
But three nearby communities all want the water to stay cold.
Irongate, Clifton Forge, and Covington all benefit from the colder water--
Because of the low temperature, it's cheaper to process sewage.
That's because colder water can safely absorb more nutrients than warmer
water can.
And nothing is decided in Covington without Westvaco weighing in.
The city's largest company isn't warming up to the idea of warmer water.

confinement for a month after getting caught kissing each other in the
barracks.
The male and female rats were discovered under a desk in a dark room on

((When Frank Beamer got drenched two weeks ago J.B. Grimes wearing the hat was
the first to see if Beamer was O-K.
Now Beamer and the Hokies are checking on Grimes.
Grimes left Saturday's game against Miami of Ohio complaining of Chest and
arm pains.
He transferred to Roanoke Memorial later that day and was scheduled for
bypass surgery on Wednesday.
But because of complications the surgery was performed this morning.))

as the head swimming coach at Olympic Park Pool in southwest Roanoke County
is back in the hunt for the gold.
Phillips failed in his attempt to make the '96 olympic team, but while he was
coaching he kept training and swimming.
He now has been accepted into the resident program of United States Swimming
in Colorado Springs.
USS personnel believe Phillips has the potential to make the olympic team in
the year 2000, so he is now living in Colorado and training with that goal in
mind. If his times continue to improve he will training there right up to the
next Olympic games.
Phillips, who also was an assistant coach for the Marlins swim team, is
guaranteed of at least a year in the program.
