A day late, Atlantis was cleared for landing yesterday, dropping through the
Florida clouds for a safe touchdown.
The shuttle brought home astronaut Michael Foale who spent four and a half
months on the troubled Russian Mir space station.

jumped into his lap as soon as they saw their dad.

telephone chat yesterday with President Clinton.
Clinton called to urge Wilder to endorse Don Beyer.
Jim Gilmore is also seeking Wilder's backing.

Starting today, making a phone call from a pay phone could cost more.

Pay telephone owners can now charge what ever they want for a local call,
and limit how much time you get for your money.
Up till now, the State Corperation limited the cost of a pay phone call to
25 cents for unlimited time.
But last year, congress stripped the states of their authority to regulate
pay phone prices.
Virginia fought back in court, and lost, so as of today the SCC will give up
control of the phones.

Wythe County's prosecutor is making some drastic changes in the way General
District court operates.
Tommy (Bared) Baird recently notified county officials he and his assistants
will no longer handle some misdemeanor cases.

The ones in question are considered "state offenses"-- and include driving
under the influence and assault and battery.
(Bared) Baird says he'll continue to operate this way until the county pays
him more than 20-thousand dollars.

Virginia code on fund raising and solicitation changed recently.
It prohibits elementary schools from conducting sales campaigns that require
students to go door to door.
Franklin County's had these initiatives in place since 19-89.
