Airline officials say the plane changed course to try and avoid the storm.
A short time later it crashed in swampy farmland and exploded.
All 69 passengers, and 5 crew members were killed in the crash.

The combination of alcohol and a gun seriously injured a college student early this morning according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators say 19-year-old John Swartz called 9-1-1 saying he'd accidentally shot his friend.
When rescue workers arrived they found 20-year-old Samuel Parshall of Spotsylvania with a gun shot wound to the head.
Parshall is in intensive care at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Apparently Parshall, a James Madison University student, was in Montgomery County visiting Swartz.
Investigators say both had been drinking and handling the gun.
No charges have been filed.
