He may not have been a country boy in real life.. But he certainly was one at
heart.
John Denver began his career in the 60s as an aspiring folk singer in Los
Angeles.
He became a star in the 70s with his songs of the simple country life and was
named country music entertainer of the year in 1975.
His record sales worldwide made him one of the top five recording artists in
the history of the music industry.
Denver branched out into acting in the late 70s.. and in 1977 he starred with
George Burns in the successful comedy "Oh God."
Denver was one of the most famous residents of Aspen, Colorado in his beloved
Rocky Mountains.
He devoted much of his non-performing life to environmental and quality of
life causes.. in 1976 establishing the non-profit windstar foundation to
support environmental education and research.
But is was the clean simple melodies of his music that most will remember him
for.
In 1989 he serenaded former President George Bush and his wife Barbara with
the song that will certainly be his legacy..
