Pulaski County residents and the entire high school athletic community are
mourning the death of one of their own.
Chief medical examiner, Dr. David Oxley, has ruled out a heart attack or
spinal trauma in the death of 16-year-old Danny Lee Cook.
Cook collapsed after a routine play in Friday night's game against William
He was pronounced dead at a near-by hospital.
A review of the game tapes by police and Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney did
NOT find anything unusual.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4 at Dublin United
Workers in a California railyard made an unexpected find yesterday.
They found 8 vietnam-era bombs intact, each weighing 250 pounds.
The yard is near the site where a train-load of bombs exploded 24 years ago.

A military bomb squad detonated the bombs on the site this morning, saying
they were too dangerous to move.
It was supposed to be a routine rescue of a disabled yacht, but then
something went wrong.
The tanker that was coming to save the yacht, smashed into it
instead--breaking the yacht apart and sending it sinking into the ocean.
Crew members on board the yacht frantically tried to flee the crumbling
vessle as it quickly went underwater.
One crewman was able to jump free but the other two were sucked under.
Remarkably they all bobbed up again and were rescued.

Work on a new interchange on Interstate 581 may get underway by year's end.
And, now it looks as if a pedestrian and bicycle lane across the highway
WILL be included.
The new interchange will be built near Valley View Mall to improve the flow
of traffic around the shopping area.
It should be completed by the holiday shopping season of 1998.
Roanoke City Council will approve a construction bid this week, and City
Manager Bob Herbert is recommending the low bid that INCLUDES construction of
the bike path and walkway.
The path will add about 500- thousand dollars to the cost of the
But it will also advance plans for a new greenway along Lick Run, that
will connect downtown Roanoke with Valley View Mall.
The state's newspapers are starting to name their picks for public office
begining with the Newsport News Daily Press which endorsed Don Beyer.
It's the first big paper to express a preference this year.
The paper says it is supporting Beyer because of his stands on abortion,
taxes and education, among other issues.
Republican Jim Gilmore says he's disappointed but feels the people

delegate Preston Bryant.
This comes after he's been battered by his opponent concerning education.
Bryant says the endorsement refutes Democrat Jimmy Feinman's claims that

advertising that too much of the medicine can harm their children.
Relatively small overdoses of acetaminophen (UH-SET-UH-MEN-O-FEN), Tylenol's

A Romanian television reporter was just doing his job--
reporting on a auto demonstration when a stunt car came racing toward him,
on fire and out-of-control, knocking him and several others to the ground.
The car was supposed to climb a platform and burst into flames when hitting
the ground. But the driver missed the platform and lost control of the car.
