Testimony began today in the trial of Earl Bramlett-
He's the man accused of killing a Vinton Family.
Today police officers and firefighters described what they found when they
first arrived at the Hodges home.
Funeral services were held for the Pulaski County football player who died
Friday. Danny Lee Cook was laid to rest in Dublin.

It was "the most horrible crime we've ever had in Roanoke County," That's
according to Prosecutor Skip Burkart.
He laid out the Commonwealth's case today against Earl Bramblett.

It's all circumstantial. The Commonwealth's Attorney told the jury: "I
can't play you a video tape of Mr. Bramblett going in and shooting the [Hodges]
in the head."
The Hodges home provided a host of evidence:
- -ballistics; the bullets used to kill three of the victims match the chemical
composition of 22-caliber cartridges found in Bramblett's possession.
- -accelerant used to fuel the fire. Bramblett was found scrubbing a pair of
blue jeans that bore traces of an accelerant - -the same chemical used to start
three separate fires in the Hodges home.
- -photos and tapes. Bramblett recorded telephone conversations with 11-year
old Winter Hodges, one of the victims. He also had a photograph of her in the

When Bramblett was told about the Hodges' death, he allegedly asked who
killed them... before anyone had said anything about a murder investigation.
Police also claim he gave inconsistent answers when asked about the last
time he'd seen the Hodges alive.
Defense attorney Mac Doubles reminded the jury that "rumor, assumptions and
innuendo are not hard fact," but he did not refute the prosecutor's summary of

Hundreds of young people wearing black and gold ribbons bid a final farewell
to 16-year old Lee Cook.
The Pulaski County football player, who wore his number 77 jersey with
pride, died during Friday night's game against William Fleming.

Former Governor Doug Wilder is off the fence.
And in fact, he dismantled the fence behind him tonight.
During his weekly statewide radio show tonight, Wilder said he wanted to put
all the speculation to rest.
He will not endorse any candidate in the Governor's Race.
He says he wishes both Don Beyer and Jim Gilmore well.
Wilder says it is up to them to make their cases with the voters.

That's what Democratic candidate Don Beyer wants to know.
He says a one-million dollar contribution from Philip Morris to the
Republican National Committee might have been laundered into Gilmore's war
Gilmore denies any link between the tobacco company and a contribution he
received from the Republican Party.
At a stop in Roanoke this afternoon, Gilmore scoffed at the suggestion his
campaign is hiding contributions from big tobacco.

A Danville police officer who killed an alleged shoplifter will NOT face
That word from Roanoke's Commonwealth Attorney Don Caldwell.
He says Officer Dewey Hancock Junior acted appropriately when he shot and
killed 25-year old David Pryor last August.
Pryor had resisted arrest on shoplifting charges at Belk Department Store.
He fled, but Hancock caught up to him behind a furniture store.
Pryor sprayed Hancock with the officer's mace and reached for the

State police say there were no witnesses or fingerprints on the weapons.
But Caldwell says Hancock is telling the truth about what happened.
A truck carrying suspected toxic chemicals
caught fire in New Jersey- on Interstate 90.
The blaze forced police to close the highway in both directions- stopping

Residents nearby were told to keep their windows closed.
Others were forced out.

A divided court of federal appeals judges is letting Virginia's newest
abortion law stay in effect -- for now.
The U-S Appeals Court in Richmond finally issued a ruling this afternoon on
the parental notification law that took effect in July.
With NO comment, the judges voted 7-to-5 to let the law remain in effect
until it could go to trial.
Planned Parenthood of Virginia had tried to block the law, and won an early
injunction that was quickly overturned.
Republican Attorney General Richard Cullen called today's temporary decision
a "big victory."
A lifetime of public service -- but he's never held publicly elected office.
Now Republican John Hager's trying to prove HIS experience can help lead
Virginia from the chair of Lieutenant Governor.
