An Alleghany Highlands man has been diagnosed with meningococcemia-- also
known as spinal meningitis.
He's currently being treated at Alleghany Regional Hospital.
Intimate contacts and some hospital personnel who've had direct contact are
being treated with antibiotics, to protect them from the disease.
The illness causes infection of the central nervous system.
About 70 cases are reported each year in Virginia.
