Republican Jim Gilmore comes out on top in our latest "NEWS 7 Mason-Dixon
poll" with 46-percent support among likely voters.
Democrat Don Beyer's 42-percent puts Gilmore's four point lead just outside
the margin of error-- making Gilmore the leader in this race.
Gilmore also came out on top today in a poll released by The Washington
In our poll, Gilmore has a 53-37 advantage with white voters.
Beyer has a 68-12 advantage with black voters... but NO Virginia Democrat
has won statewide office in modern times with less than 90-percent black
Doug Wilder declined to endorse Beyer in the midst of this poll.
Among men, Gilmore again has a 53-37 advantage.
Among women, Beyer has a slimmer 47-39 advantage.
Meanwhile, Don Beyer says he isn't discouraged by new poll results that
show him trailing Jim Gilmore.
During a visit to Virginia's Explore Park this afternoon, the Democratic
candidate for Governor said he's been involved in enough elections to know that
late polls don't mean very much.

It was three years ago that local police were trying to keep tabs on Earl
Bramblett and convince him to tell them what he knew about the Hodges murders.
Just two days after the bodies were found, Bramblett got STATE Police
approval to buy a handgun- using the Hodges' home as HIS address on the

He'd practically LIVED at the house on East Virginia Avenue in Vinton, but
it was uninhabitable on August 31, 1994... the day Bramblett took a taxi to
Vinton Pawn and bought a .22 caliber revolver.
State Police in Richmond approved the purchase within 45 minutes for lack
of criminal convictions.
The pawn shop owner testified today that he knew Bramblett and thought he
was a member of the Hodges family.

Bramblett had NOT been charged with arson and murder at that point and
wasn't even officially a suspect.
Mullins says he thought Bramblett was just another man who wanted to buy a
gun for protection.
Two Roanoke men crashed close to a home in Bedford County after they say
their car was run off the road.
The accident happened about eight this evening along route 757.
The men say another driver ran them off the road and they flew over a 30
foot embankment and plowed into a shed next to a home.
The driver and the passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to area
The accident is under investigation.
Two Norfolk Southern trains collided head on this afternoon injuring three

The crash happened in southern West Virginia near the Kentucky Border.
The two trains slammed into each other- one of the engines caught fire.
State police say the workers saw the crash coming and jumped from the trains
The workers are hurt but not seriously.
Both trains were carrying cars loaded with coal.
City officials in Clifton Forge and C-S-X representatives got together today
to try and save a piece of history.

demolish it to cut costs--a plan that it temporarily halted following a request

Nineteen year old Woodward said baby Matthew had been crying and out of sorts
for most of the day on February 4th, when she came to get him out of his crib

A Danville man will spend the rest of his life in prison for selling crack
cocaine and allegedly shooting a Danville police officer.
Marlowe Andre Farmer was sentenced to a life term without parole.
Farmer brought more than 30 kilograms of crack cocaine into the
Danville-Pittsylvania County area.

The judge also considered evidence Farmer shot and injured Officer Dennis
Haley during a drug raid last November.
Farmer denies shooting Haley and was never convicted of the crime.

Almost four thousand people gathered as the event kicked off its Pet
Ninety animals competed in various categories.
There was a pair of canine Blues Brother.
Doggy Parton was complete with a curly blonde wig and accessories.
A pot bellied pig became a slightly embarrassed beast of burden.
Some owners and pets even wore matching costumes.
