The warm waters of El Nino lurk along the equator and reach
from the coast of California to the coast of Chile, where winter has just

This is the power of El Nino.
(Nats)
It's an environmental force that's left parts of Chile in shambles. For much
of this past winter, El Nino severely pounded this South American country.
Record rains, massive floods, and lives lost.
(SOT: tape 3 3:08:52) "Do you blame El Nino? Yes, that's right. That's the
reason why.")
El Nino's wrath is worrying many on America's West Coast.
Some experts are convinced that the U-S has already seen a preview of El
Ninowith the recent Pacific storms, like Hurricane Pauline, plowing through
Acapulco.
But other researchers aren't so sure.
Still, Californians are looking south of the equator for answers. Chile and
America's most populous state are like twin sisters in their hemispheres.
They both have long temperate coastlines on the edge of El Nino's grip.
(NATS)
Here in Chile, El Nino split ships in two.
Blew trees around like match sticks, and sent people running for cover.
The storms were unheard of in this country.
(SOT: Luis Rasal, Meteorologist Tape 2 /3 01:13:02 At this moment we are

It's that high temperature band of water that is fueling El Nino. And many of
Chile's meteorologists believe the effects could be felt for up to another
year.
(SOT: Ivan Torres, Meteorological Center of Chile Tape 1 01:08:31 In Spanish
with English dub..."Here in Chile, we're expecting the next winter, or at
least part of next winter, will be very rainy.")
He says, "Here in Chile we're expecting that at least part of next winter will
be very rainy."
That's why Americans are asking..."If it could happen to Chile, what's in
store for the U-S?"
Steve Anderson is the publisher of Chip News, Chile's only English language
internet site.
(SOT: Steve Anderson, Internet Publisher " 5:05:05 Tape 5 I think you
probably have to expect the worse ... however the US is a developed country
and I think the effect of El Nino in a country like Chile is usually more
disasterous.)
Nobody's sure if El Nino will attack America in the same way.
But Chile's experience with this Pacific weather-maker could provide a sneak
peak of how wicked our winter could be.
