When scientists talk about El Nino, they usually mention this... (NATS) Heavy rains, high winds, and a potential for destruction. All part of the Pacific weather phenomenon that has many in the U-S concerned.

(More NATS)

But there's another side to El Nino that has scientists worried....it's this.
(Pictures of rats)

It's an explosion of rodents, fueled by El Nino's rains.

(SOT: Dr. Ingrid Heitmann, Head of Microbiology at Institute of Public Health

Tape 6 6:03:43 "El Nino increases the amount of rain and amount of humidity. Therefore it increases the number of shrubs and flowers and vegetation in general rodents eat. And it has a direct effect on increasing the rodent's number."
Here in Chile, the rodents have brought disease. More specifically the deadly Hanta Virus. A vicious illness that attacks the respiratory system and can kill in days if not treated immediately. The US had a deadly outbreak in 1993. It killed dozens of people. Now El Nino's approach has many fearing it could happen again.

(SOT: Dr. Ingrid Heitmann, Institute of Public Health Tape 6 6:04:39 "Is El

Nino to blame? I think so, we had infected mice before, but this year, it's made a big difference. I mean, this year we had an explosion of cases.")
El Nino's wild weather conditions have also brought other medical problems. Hepatitis, malaria, even yellow fever. All caused by the massive amounts of rain, and the resulting water contamination. All concerns for American health officials.

(SOT: Dr. Heitmann Tape 6 6:1:05 "One thing for sure though, El Nino seems

to be getting worse as it comes every ten years. It seems to be getting more powerful, and creating more troubles."
But El Nino has also shown a gentler side. This is Chile's Atacama Desert. Usually the driest place on earth, El Nino's heavy rains have brought the landscape to life. Ana Maria La Fuente is a resident of this usually arid place. She says EL Nino has caused a miracle.
(SOT: Voice of translator: Ana Maria La Fuente Tape 2 9:26:12 "So not only

me, but all the people who come here realize this is a marvelous miracle. That this is a unique phenomenon in all the world.")
Nobody's sure if El Nino will turn the same trick with the deserts of the American southwest. But Chile's experience with this powerful weather system has got them wondering if the tumbleweeds will have to make a little room for bloom.))
