We reported that the pilot of a small plane that had been reported missing had landed safely, after leaving Roanoke on Sunday.
That was wrong.
The pilot, Gary Mahsman of Palmyra Missouri, crashed in southeastern Illinois and was killed.
Mahsman's Piper aircraft was spotted in a cornfield yesterday. Officials in Illnois say the crash apparently happened late Sunday afternoon.
The exact cause of the crash is under investigation.

Letty is the oldest of four sisters.
She, Kate, Fan, and Rosa lived at Avenel.

Although we had won the victory each heart stood still at the thought our dear ones had been killed."
Dispatches to Avenel were slow. Stories seemed to spread more quickly by word of mouth. "Tuesday, July 23rd..."In the afternoon I went to the court house where the ladies met and packed a bag with linen, lint and clothes, pillows and everything to send to Manassas to the wounded.
A number of rumors came to the village: some said from three to seven thousand of our men and from seven to 15 thousand of the enemy. It is impossible to know the truth.
...Mr Hooper who had just come from Richmond thinks that after such a defeat the Yankees will not attack us again." Stand up DENISE ALLEN/NEWS 7: AND OF COURSE WE KNOW THE YANKEES DID ATTACK AGAIN.
