Starting today, Bell Atlantic is hiking the cost of a pay-phone call in
Virginia from 25 to 35-cents.
Bell Atlantic says this is the first time it has raised rates since 19-84.
A federal law passed last year deregulated pay-phones.
That means it's up to the companies that own the phones to determine rates.
Bell Atlantic says it took a "long, hard" look at the Virginia market and
decided 35-cents was a fair rate.
The company says it will take up to 90-days to phase in the new rates.
