Movie Review

Mad City examines the media's involvement in breaking news stories. When does the newsman become the news and where is the line to be drawn? Dustin Hoffman is Max Brackett, a reporter who badly wants to break into a major market news show. He's in the right place at the right time when a laid off security guard named Sam, played by John Travolta takes over a museum, shoots a security guard and takes a bunch of school kids hostage.
Max becomes Sam's spin doctor, manipulating the story and advising him on the best way to build up public support. Alan Alda is Max's nemesis, a heartless news flack who uses the situation to try and discredit Max and destroy Sam.
Mad City is relentless in its cynical view of major network news shows. The movie gets a B. It is interesting and elicits excellent performances from Hoffman and Travolta; but it may be of limited interest to those outside the news business. cutopen
