even though just a few weeks ago the plant was planning to hire hundreds.
Communications Manager Kori Reed says the union's refusal to work on Sundays
prompted Goodyear to stop investing in the Danville plant.

days a week.
The biggest banking deal in U-S history was announced this afternoon.
First Union says it's taking over Philadelphia-based CoreStates Financial for
a reported 16-point-six BILLION dollars in stock.
The deal will make First Union the sixth-largest bank in the country, and the
biggest bank on the East Coast.
A First Union spokeswoman said the merger should NOT have any impact on jobs
in the Roanoke Valley.
If the federal government approves the deal, the merger should be completed
by next November.
The United States is strengthening its force in the Persian Gulf.

22-year old Teddy Roe Dixon faces two life sentences plus six years for

In a confession-- Dixon said he shot Epperson after stealing money from

Commonwealth's attorney Greg Goad had expected to try the case tomorrow.

Lynchburg police have few leads in the stabbing death of an elderly man last
The body of 72-year old Samuel Junius York was discovered in his home at the
Walden Pond apartment complex around 9:30 Monday.
Friends had reported York missing earlier in the day.
Police say there was "no" sign of forced entry to the house.
Fourteen detectives with the central Virginia regional homicide squad are

Workers digging around the industrial park in Northeast Roanoke found the
remains of eleven bodies buried there.
It's believed the bodies were buried sometime in the early 18-hundreds.
The city now owns this land near the old Monterey Golf Course.
But family members related to the land's ORIGINAL owners believe their
relatives were buried there.
A week ago the city discovered what it thinks is the remains of Yelverton
Oliver... a wealthy horse racer who died in 18-57.
Investigators think he's now resting in this metal casket -- a burial rite
reserved for the rich.
An attorney who helped in this investigation, says a group of scientists from
Atlanta helped find the remains.
