Good evening and welcome everybody to the Friday Football Extra, on yet another wet, raw Friday!
Before we are finished tonight we will crown regional champs in three divisions, meet another player of the week, check out the statewide scoreboard and preview tomorrow's Fleming-Culpeper County game.
SS=VHSL GIRLS HOOPS

But if it's one thing we pride ourselves on here at Friday Football Extra, it's that we have good manners.
And that means ladies first.
Three area girl's basketball teams have been lighting up the hardwood at Virginia High in Bristol today in the state semi-finals.
And it's only right that we get all of you high school sports fans up to date on their progress right off the bat.
We begin with the Glenvar Highlanders

who under first year head coach Brian Harvey met a tough George Mason team in this afternoon's semi-finals.
And Mason would get the first hoop of the night as sophomore Kate Jackson completes the nice left handed drive to the hoop for the layin.
But back come the Highlanders as Mandy Williams dishes inside to Erika Hale, who banks in the ball and draws a foul in the process.
The Mustangs were still up by three before Hale got physical and put back the Elizabeth Webb blocked shot in the paint.
Katrina Williams would keep dishing as she feeds Webb for two off the glass as the Highlanders start to assert themselves.
Later in the second half, it's Williams again leading the break and finding an open Hale who makes her move off the right block.

Glenvar beats George Mason 43-to-33 to advance to tomorrow's title game at 1 o'clock against the tall Northwood Panthers.

The Group Two-A semi-finals took center stage in the night session, as Region 3 tournament champion Salem took on the Turner Ashby Knights.

SUPER=51-Bristol/Salem vs. Turner Ashby; :00

The Lady Spartans were hoping to keep the good luck of the western portion of the Roanoke Valley on their side as they faced the Valley district's Knights.
Salem's offense kept things close early in the game as Lindsay Carroll gets the deuce to tie the game in the first half.
Salem's strong hand, Sarah Palmer would then do her thing by getting two of her game high 19 points, but Salem trailed by two at the end of the first half.
The Spartans would continue struggling at the third quarter, but Erin Patrick gets this bucket to cut Turner Ashby's lead to 7 points.
But the girls from Dayton hit SUPER=52-Turner Ashby/51/Salem/45;

several key free throws at the end of the game to seal the 51-to-45 win over Salem and end the Spartans season.

Byrd Boss Richard Thrasher was back in the final four for the fourth straight year.
This one would start out like a track meet as Byrd jams the ball inside to Brandy Allen who knocks in the hoop for an early Byrd lead. Allen led the way tonight with 18.
The Terriers would continue running the floor as Stephanie Parnell takes the pass inside and scores 2 of her 17 points on the game to give Byrd a big lift.

Allen would again show her stuff with a nifty layin as the Terriers beat Charlottesville 57-to-47 to advance to tomorrow's title game against Turner Ashby.

(( The Bulldogs stood their ground in a steady rain tonight at Dan Greene Stadium waiting for the Generals to make their entrance.
The action would get started five minutes into the game as Martinsville's Danny Wade sneaks in from the one to make it 7-to-nothing Bulldogs in the first.
Later in the first, Wade would be forced out of the pocket, and forced to retreat. But like any good field general he eventually went on the offensive. And he will take off on a 58 scamper that eventually takes him to the endzone and puts Martinsville on top 14-to-nothing after a quarter.
But in the second quarter the Generals would attempt to come back with Gary Buchanan rolling out to his right from the 50. He will find Matthew Young down the right side for a 31 yard gain.
A couple of of plays later, Lee would let Eric Satterfield bounce his way into the endzone to cut the lead to 14-to-6 after the missed two point try.
The Dogs would take a 14-to-6 lead into the lockeroom at halftime.
And the Dogs would open the third with another score. From midfield Marcus Hairston gallops off the left side through a huge hole and he will take it in the house to make it a 20-to-6 game.
About that time many expected the folks from Lee to head back to Ben Hur, but Satterfield would take this run off the right side, into the clear and across the goal line to cut the lead to 20-to-14 after the two point conversion.
Then with just 52 seconds left in the game the Generals Satterfield will score from the 10 to tie the game at 20-all heading to overtime!!
Lee would complete the comeback by scoring on its first possesion on Buchanan's run up the middle. Lee shocks Martinsville with 22 unanswered points to win 28-to-20.)) ((DON WILLIAMS/LEE HEAD COACH:)) ((ERIC SATTERFIELD/LEE RUNNING BACK:)) ((TAYLOR EDWARDS/MARTINSVILLE HEAD COACH:))
