A fatal accident around 9-45 last night shut down part of Interstate-77 near the 24th mile marker.

The four-vehicle wreck happened close to the Poplar Camp exit.
State police say a tractor trailor was unable to stop for a traffic backup, and plowed into a car causing the wreck.
Investigators confirm Alma Gertrude Weeks of Durham, North Carolina died at the scene.
The accident is still under investigation.

Police arrested a former Pittsylvania County prosecutor yesterday-- accusing him of hitting a teenager in the head with a pistol.
61-year old Joseph Whitehead is charged with assault and battery. Investigators say he accused the 17-year old of stealing from him, threatened to kill him, then hit him in the back of the head.
Investigators also found guns and ammunition at Whitehead's home.
Whitehead is a convicted felon and not allowed to own firearms.

He served six months in prison.

The 14-year old girl told police she was waiting outside after school when a 15-year old male grabbed her backpack and ran.
She chased him to a corner of the building -- she says that's when he raped her.
Police say they will press charges against the teen -- they are not releasing his name because he's underage.

Young and old alike turned out near Central Park last night to watch the giant balloons being inflated.
About 4,000 Macy's volunteers take part in the parade which features 17 giant balloons, 21 floats, 14 marching bands, and 44 clown units.
As usual, Santa Claus makes his appearance at the end of the parade.
