The fire started around eight Thanksgiving night.
Residents say it took about 15 minutes for the first fire engine to arrive,
but Chief Lewis says their response time was within the 4 to six minute range
and the 9-1-1 tapes indicate that as well.
Chief Lewis says fighting this blaze was difficult.
Flames jumped the firewall because it did not extend far enough from the
sides of the building.
And a pond on one side of the complex prevented fire fighters from attacking
the blaze from that angle.
In all, the fire forced 62 families out of their homes.
The Red Cross has provided some residents with temporary housing until
Monday.
Residents still in need of housing at that time should contact the Red Cross
again.

A group led by Salem businessman Bill Pinkerton began working back in March
to re-open the old rail line INTO Saltville.
Pinkerton hoped to have trains running by now.
But he had to push his timetable back until at least 1999.
The problem involves a stretch of the line that runs across land owned by
the U-S Gypsum company.
There have been cave-ins on the property in the past.
Pinkerton says U-S Gypsum wants to make sure it won't be sued if another
cave-in damages the tracks after it closes its Saltville plant in a year or so.
Pinkerton is trying to negotiate an agreement with the company so his crew
can get back to work.
