((A sobriety checkpoint was set up near Vinton last friday night in an effort to curb holiday drunk driving.
There, law enforcement officials approached drivers to see if they had been drinking.
Officers don't just smell for an alcoholic beverage, they use other means of detection as well.
Not maintaining eye contact, speech patterns and other tell-tale signs can tip off an officer that the driver may have had one too many.
If an officer suspects the driver to be drunk, a series of simple coordination tests are done.
