A Montgomery County circuit judge this morning convicted 52- year- old James
Reid of capital murder.
The judge has not decided whether Reid will be put to death or spend life in
Reid was convicted of beating and stabbing Annie Lester in her home last
Yesterday Reid entered an Alford plea in court in hopes of avoiding the
The plea acknowledges the state's evidence-- without admitting guilt.
The defense maintains Reid does NOT remember what happened that day because
he had been drinking heavily.
His attorneys point to the fact Reid did not try to conceal his blood
covered clothes after the crime as an indication of his state of mind.

A truck driver from Tennessee is facing involuntary manslaugter charges
after an accident this morning that killed one person and critically injured
Witnesses say 48- year- old Harry Hoopes pulled his truck into traffic when
a car came up from behind.
The passenger side of the car was crushed, killing the passenger and
trapping the driver, 22- year- old Harrison Mumford of Kentucky.
Rescue workers spent almost half an hour freeing Mumford, who is now listed
in critical condition.
A Maryland man is facing charges in the stabbing death of a 72- year- old
Samuel J. York was found stabbed to death in his apartment November 17th.
On Monday, Maryland police stopped 27- year- old Kenneth Lloyd Lawson as he
was driving YORK'S stolen car.
Lawson was returned to Lynchburg where he now faces murder charges.
Police have also recovered a possible murder weapon.
Lawson remains held without bond.
The U-N Security Council is meeting today to discuss Iraq's oil-for-food
The council is considering expanding the program that allows Baghdad to sell
oil to raise money for humanitarian needs.
The current program expires at midnight.
Right now, Iraq is allowed to
sell just over two billion dollars' worth of oil every six months to buy food
and medicine for its citizens.
Israeli airports, railroads, government offices, banks and even the Tel Aviv
Stock exchange are closed for a second day.
Some 700- thousand Israeli workers are striking over pension plans.
The strikers ignored a national labor court injunction ordering some of them
back to work today.
The walkout has also paralyzed the national telephone and electric companies
and other state run companies.
There are water shortages in parts of the country and garbage is piling up
on the streets of Tel Aviv.
The cause of a suspicious fire that destroyed a Downtown Roanoke abandoned

A 33 foot eastern red cedar now adorns the lawn at the Governor's mansion.
And, unlike last year, state capitol groundskeepers did NOT chop down
Virginia's "holiday tree" from the scenic capitol grounds.
Governor George Allen and family did the honors on this year's tree -- which
was plucked instead from a state juvenile correctional facility.
We're told the juvenile inmates helped transport the tree.

In Australia, nearly two dozen cuddly Koalas are getting used to a new home
They were taken from their tree homes on Kangaroo Island yesterday and
transported to the mainland in an effort to reduce their population.
Some five- thousand koalas live on the island, about two- thousand more than
it can sustain.
The overcrowding has resulted
in serious shortages of native vegetation for the furry creatures.
