Rick Knobel (kuh-NO-buhl) wasn't armed when he was shot to death in
But today the man accused of his murder claimed it was self-defense.
Pete Tinsley admits he killed Knobel earlier this year.
He fired at least two shots from a handgun as Knobel tried to enter the
defendant's home on Bent Mountain.
The two had been drinking and began to argue over a pick-up truck.
Tinsley said he feared for his life, because of the victim's size and his
reputation for violence when he was drinking.
All of the evidence is now in. Members of the jury will hear closing
arguments and begin their deliberations in the morning.

For families of the victims, it was almost too much.

Investigators this week continue to zero on the plane's wiring, as a possible
source of the spark
that triggered the fuel tank blast.
They already KNOW the vapors in the center tank were super-heated to the
point of being
explosive, before the plane even took off. NTSB Chairman Jim Hall again
today pushed the
FAA to do SOMETHING before it happens again.

There's no question Bedford County needs to spend more on new schools and
infrastructure, but where will the money come from?

An emergency room shooting may not change security at Danville Regional
24-year old Derrick Coles allegedly shot 21-year old Darrell Bradner in the
waiting area Friday night.
Hospital officials say Coles may have been reacting to an earlier shooting
at Hardee's where Eric Coles was hurt.

The only security guard on duty was NOT armed-- and the emergency room door
did NOT have a metal detector.
Still DePriest says he has no plans to tighten security.
The alleged gunman, Derrick Coles, was arrested-- the hospital is not
releasing the victim's condition.
Botetourt County is being used as an example for the Federal Communications
Commission to show how a rural community can best utilize technology.
Commission Chairman William Kennard toured Botetourt County today.
One stop was a fiber-optic classroom at Lord Botetourt High School.
The system allows students in other schools to join the class by way of a
two-way television hook-up.

the federal government starting in January.

Sue Hart will lose some land, and get a new driveway.

The Governor says he just wants to help public school teachers.
He's found some cash to buy them all liability insurance.

The Governor's also pitching a new college tuition tax credit.
It could be worth up to about 115-dollars a year in tax savings to families
who buy into the Virginia Prepaid Education Program.
That's after a new report shows that those who are buying the prepaid
college tuition contracts are overwhelmingly affluent and white.
Governor Allen says the candidates for a judgeship that would serve citizens
from Craig County to Staunton are the most qualified attorneys he's
interviewed, outside his interviews for state Supreme Court vacancies.
But it's substitute Judge Humes Franklin, Junior who got the nod to sit in
the 25th judicial circuit.

In her first trial, she claimed years of abuse- and was found innocent by

That's the message actor Robert Downey Junior got today from a Malibu,
The judge rejected Downey's emotional plea for mercy and ordered him to
serve six months.
Downey violated terms of his parole by using drugs and alcohol.
The actor was handcuffed and led off to jail.

group of base jumpers off the Space Needle in Seattle last November-
36-year old Steve Mulholland was killed after jumping out of a plane in
Antartica over the weekend- His parachute did not open.

One of the key parts of the Fleming team, Josh Berry also received a $500

The Roanoke Express has a big weekend of divisional games coming up later

But last night each and every member of the team gave up their night off to
spend some time in the Carillon hospital children's ward at Community.
The players dropped by to pass out out some pizza, some hockey sticks, spread
some Christmas cheer and drop off some cash.
Joe Steffen played Santa Claus and presented the ward with a check for $13
hundred, 48 dollars and 65 cents.
The money for the kids was raised at a golf tourney earlier this Fall.
A number of player in the major leagues also got some unexpected gifts today.
