Some Fireworks on capitol hill today as Attorney General Reno defends her
decision not to appoint a special counsel to probe fund-raising phone calls
from the White House.
She is testifying today before a house committee.
Reno today was asked to explain why she defied congressional subpoena to
surrender a memo written to her by F-B-I director Louis Freeh.
In the memo Freeh reportedly urged her to SEEK an independent counsel.

Freeh has is also scheduled to testify.
Tax breaks of up to two-thousand dollars a year could be an added bonus for
Virginians who participate in the state's prepaid tuition program.
That's Governor Allen's proposal, but the General Assembly must still
Allen is trying to make prepaid tuition more affordable.
Statistics show that the vast majority of people signing up for the program
are affluent white families.

More money is needed for Bedford County schools, but the question of where
it will come from is still undecided.

A Roanoke County jury is now considering the murder case against Pete
Tinsley admits he killed Rick Knobel (kuh-NO-buhl) earlier this year, but
says he was acting in self defense.
He fired at least two shots from a handgun as Knobel tried to enter the
defendant's home on Bent Mountain.
The two had been drinking and began to argue over a pick-up truck.
Tinsley said he feared for his life, because of the victim's size and his
reputation for violence.
The case went to the jury this morning after lawyers presented their

Road improvements may not be keeping pace with the rapid growth rate of
Southwest Roanoke County.
Route 2-21 is now on the top of V-Dot's road improvement list.
Thirteen homes are slated to be acquired by V-DOT, and several others are
slated to lose a portion of their property.

In the first of two phases V-DOT would widen and straighten out the infamous
"harris curves" on 2-21.
To do that, VDOT is proposing two bridges to span Back Creek.
The next phase would just be a widening process.
The center fuel tank of T-W-A flight 800 gets more attention today at the
N-T-S-B hearings in Baltimore.
That will be the focus in day two of the hearings.
Chairman Jim Hall says investigators want to know why explosive fuel vapors
accumulated in the tank and what
ignited the blast.

Yesterday, the National Transportation safety board showed a videotape
simulation of the crash.
It also released a transcript of the cockpit voice recordings which
indicated the pilots had no knowledge of trouble right up to the

The woman told authorities she was attacked in the barracks by an

The female cadet was one of 20 women in this year's freshman class.
The Federal Communications Commission is using Botetourt County as an
example of how a rural community can best utilize technology.
Commission Chairman William Kennard toured Botetourt County yesterday.
One stop was a fiber-optic classroom at Lord Botetourt High School.
The system allows students in other schools to join the class by way of a
two-way television hook-up.

the federal government starting in January.

The Governor's also pitching a new college tuition tax credit.
It could be worth up to about 115-dollars a year in tax savings to families
who buy into the Virginia Prepaid Education Program.
That's after a new report shows those who are buying the prepaid college
tuition contracts are overwhelmingly affluent and white.
It's estimated that 20- million American men suffer from impotence.
And as the population continues to age, that figure is expected to more than
double by the year 2000.
