Movie Review 12/12
"Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" Mill Mountain Theater's Christmas offering, is a musical version of the famous story of a little girl, Virginia, charmingly portrayed by Madeleine Smelzer who, when taunted by some other kids for believing in Santa Claus, writes to the New York Sun newspaper and asks if Santa exists.
Some of the most effective scenes occur in the newspaper office where old time reporter Francis Church is given the assignment to respond to Virginia's letter. George Merner brings warmth and sensitivity to Church's character; and Daniel Kelley's skill is well utilized as leader of the newsboys who taunt Virginia.
The world premiere musical needs some cutting; some numbers are extraneous and others go too long; and the conclusion is anticlimactic and needs to be punched up. but the show has a cheerful holiday spirit, wonderful costumes and an elaborate set to recommend it.
"Yes, Virginia" continues through Dec. 28 on Mill Mountain Theater's main stage. cutopen
