((Entering the courthouse in Paducah, Kentucky this morning was Donna Dixon,
the judge who will decide whether high school freshman Michael Carneal should
be tried as an adult.
Police say it was Carneal who last week walked into Heath High school and
used a 22-caliber handgun to kill 3 students, paralyze one
and wound 4 others.
Under Kentucky law, someone 14 years old, as Carneal is, can be tried as an
adult if they're accused of using a gun during a felony.
Dan Boaz is the county attorney.
DAN BOAZ/MC-CRACKEN COUNTY ATTORNEY: PERSONALLY, IT'S BEEN A
NIGHTMARE. Q: A NIGHTMARE? A: OH YEA, FOR THE COMMUNITY AND EVERYONE
INVOLVED.
Now, a week since the shooting, investigators haven't charged anyone else.
Initially, the sheriff thought other students may have had knowledge that
Carneal was planning the attack, but he now says nothing supports that hunch.
FRANK AUGUSTUS/MC-CRACKEN COUNTY SHERIFF:I JUST THINK HE'S HIGHLY
INTELLIGENT, A 14 YEA OLD WITH THE I.Q. OF A 20-YEAR OLD. I DON'T THINK HE'S
INSANE OR MENTALLY DISTURBED IN ANY WAY.
Police searched the boy's room and found the empty boxes from the 600 rounds
of ammo he allegedly brought to school that morning and from their interviews
with carneal, police say he may have been influenced by a movie called "The
Basketball Diaries", that depicts a student gunning down classmates.
Carneal is expected to be treated as an adult, prosecutors
to seek maximum penalty, life in jail with no chance of parole for 25 years.
