Hampton Rapist and killer Thomas Beavers Junior was put to death tonight- setting a modern one-year record for executions in Virginia.
But Virginia corrections officials say they expect to "meet or exceed that pace" next year.

Beavers raped and murdered his 60-year old neighbor in Hampton in 1990.
His attorneys argue he was brain-damaged and incompetent to stand trial.

Beavers' jury was told he raped two other women after her murder.

Virginia only made lethal injection an option in July 1995 -- but Beavers is the 22nd inmate to die by it since then.
He's the state's 46th execution since 1982.
Only Texas has had more.
The average stay on Virginia's death row is now just under nine years... and dropping.
