Federal investigators are in Roanoke searching for the cause of yesterday's
fatal plane crash in a neighborhood.

Apparently engine trouble caused a small plane to crash into a home near the
Intersection of Delaware Avenue and Cove Road.

Two people were injured when their car collided with a tree in Montgomery
It happened around two-fifteen on Harding Road just outside Blacksburg.
Rescue crews apparently had to free the driver from the wreckage- He was
taken to Montgomery Regional hospital.
The passenger was seriously injured.
He was airlifted by Life Guard-Ten to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
State police are still investigating.

In Sacramento, California a fiery Chain-reaction crash--
Nine big rigs and 28 passenger vehicles were involved.
Four people were killed including a five year old girl.
Twenty-six others were injured.
The crash happened in heavy fog- and closed Interstate five for hours.
One driver said he could not see a thing-
Antoher said there was just a wall of fog and everybody started slowing
A supsected murderer who's holding two children hostage was allowed to talk
to his brother by phone-
but John Armstrong still hasn't surrendered.
Armstrong has said he will release the kids, but no one knows when.
Meanwhile, police continue to negotiate and the supect continues to listen.

He fled into a stranger's house where he's been holed up ever since.
As long as the two children are not hurt, police say they they'll wait as

Danville fire victims can apply for low-interest loans, starting tomorrow.
Fire did more than two million dollars in damage at this Cabin Lake
Two-hundred-fifty people were left homeless.
The U-S Small Business Administration-- a federal agency- is offering
low-interest loans to victims without insurance.

The defense has rested without calling defendant Terry Nichols to the
Nichols' wife was the last to testify-
(MA-rifay) Marife Nichols filled in some gaps of Nichols whereabouts the
week before the blast, but she could not provide an alibi for Nichols the day
before the Oklahoma City bombing.
That's when prosecutors allege he was making the bomb.
Closing arguments are likely to come Monday with jury deliberations to
If convicted, Nichols faces the death penalty.
Virginia is one inmate away from a modern execution record.
Thomas Beavers, Junior is scheduled to die by lethal injection tonight at 9
for the 1990 rape and murder of his 60-year old neighbor in Hampton.
Marguerite Lowery was a retired school cafeteria manager.
Her daughter and brother have said they plan to attend tonight's execution.
Beavers would be the ninth execution in Virginia this year -- breaking last
year's modern state record of eight.
Only Texas has executed more inmates this year, and OVERALL since the
re-imposition of the death penalty in the late 1970s.
A West Virginia judge says the Kroger Company did NOT violate any
agreements when it closed a distribution center and transferred the jobs to

A group of citizens and union leaders filed suit after Kroger decided to
close the Charleston warehouse earlier this year.
The group argued that Kroger had an obligation to stay because it received
But this week a judge ruled that while Kroger used low-interest bonds to
build retail stores, the money did not go to the warehouse.
The Roanoke Distribution Center is now being expanded.
Employees who accepted transfers from West Virginia are now on the job in
the Roanoke Valley.

The newest diet drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration is causing
The American Heart Association is warning patients about the obesity drug
Meridian controls the appetite by affecting chemicals in the brain--
The Heart Association cautions doctors about prescribing the drug because of
the risks associated with high blood pressure, heart disease or uncontrolled
The association's red flag warning follows health scares that caused diet
drugs Fen-Phen and Redux (re-ducks) to be pulled off the market in September.
The largest study ever of alcohol's effects on health reveals modest drinking
is good for you.
The American Cancer Society has discovered a drink a day for middle aged
people reduces the risk of death by 20 percent.
That's in part because alcohol raises levels of H-D-L, the good level of
Alcohol has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and other
diseases, but the study concludes that in moderation--it's healthful.
Don't think you'll live longer by drinking more, though
A study by researchers in the New England Journal of Medicine says the
benefits decrease with heavy consumption.
A recent study says Danville does not have enough doctors-- and many
patients can't afford the ones that do have practices in the region.
The Virginia Health Care Association found that Danville was lacking in
primary care doctors including pediatricians-- also scarce-- dermatologists,
gynecologists and general practice physicians.

because the incomes are generally higher.
He says what both Danville and Pittsylvania County need are physicians who

The Danville Health Department says the facility is limited in the number of
patients it can accommodate, so many go untreated.

Every Wednesday Dr. Glenn Kimble performs dental care on children of low-
income families in Bedford County.
For some, it's their first time in a dentist's chair.
