A four day hostage drama in central Florida ended early this morning with
Orlando police officers stormed the house where a suspected killer had been
holding two children hostage.
The children were safely rescued-- but during a struggle with police their
captor, John Armstrong, was fatally shot.
At least one officer was wounded.
Armstrong was suspected of fatally shooting a man and wounding a woman in
nearby Winter Park before leading police on a chase that ended Tuesday near the
He barged inside, ordered their mothers out and took the children hostage.

Governor Allen stood before the old Norfolk-and-Western Railroad
headquarters in Roanoke today...
and declared his support for turning it into a Higher Education Center.
He says his new budget proposal for the next two years will include the
entire nine million dollars the center's supporters wanted.

The Governor also used the occasion to announce another five- and- a- half
million dollars in state funds for various local museums and foundations.
Of course the Allen's proposals are subject to review by his successor and
must be approved by the General Assembly.
State and federal police are interviewing witnesses who saw a bank robbery
It happened at the Southwest Virginia Savings bank near Crossroads Mall.
Witnesses told police the robber is a male, and he was carrying a gun.
But he reportedly did not fire any shots during the robbery.
Police are not releasing any information about the suspect or a getaway
The bank did not say if it will reopen today.

Virginia set a modern day state record for the most executions in one year.
Thomas Beavers' cried for mercy last night as he was given a lethal
Beavers is the 22nd inmate to die by lethal injection, which was only made
an option in 19-95.
He was executed for the rape and murder of his 60- year- old neighbor in
His attorneys argue he was brain-damaged and incompetent to stand trial.
Marguerite Lowerey was a retired cafeteria manager... and apparently NOT his
Beavers' jury was told he raped two other women after her murder.
The average stay on Virginia's death row is now just under nine years... and
An inmate at the Botetourt County jail has taken his own life.
Officials say 30- year- old Danny Lee Ayers committed suicide last night.
Ayers was out on bond on rape charges in Rockbridge County, but was serving
a two and half year sentence for abduction in Botetourt County.
Earl Bramblett may have been convicted last month of killing a family of
four, but police aren't finished with him.
The State Police Violent Crimes Unit is still working on the Bramblett

(( Tammy Lynn Akers disappeared the morning of February 8th, 1977.
Earl Bramblett was questioned in the early 80's about his association with
Tammy, but he has never provided any information.
The girl's mother says Tammy was a frequent visitor at the A-frame house
Bramblett built in Bedford County.

It was here- -a year after the girls disappeared- -that Bramblett
reportedly broke down at a party and said he wished he hadn't hurt Tammy.
The young girls who were with him at the time later told police that
Bramblett had predicted Tammy would never be found.
There was another girl- -Angela Mae Rader- -who disappeared the same day.
Angela's is convinced Bramblett knows more than he's saying.

Carolyn Davis had dropped off her sister at school the day she disappeared.

Police hope somebody comes forward to tell them about it.
They also want to know more about a third girl Tammy's mother says was at
the house the night BEFORE Tammy and Angela disappeared. Maybe she remembers
