That's a slim margin of roughly 100 people -- about the same number that

It could be a year before we know what caused a fatal plane crash last week
in Roanoke.

The National Transporation Safety Board issued a preliminary report today.
So far investigators say they have not found any signs of engine failure.
Just before crashing, Texas pilot James Notch told air traffic controllers
his plane had engine problems.
Notch died when the plane crashed into this Northwest Roanoke house.
Most of the plane burned after it hit the ground.
What's left of the wreckage has been moved to Hagerstown, Maryland for more
examination.

The SilkAir Jetliner went down with no sign of trouble.
The jet apparently climbed to a normal cruising altitude and was halfway
into its flight when it disppaeared from radar.
This is another crash of a Boeing 737- the most widely used plane in the
world.
A 737 crashed in Pittsburgh in 1994 and an earlier one in Colorado Springs
remain unsolved.

((An autopsy was performed this morning by the cook county medical examiner but
toxicology reports which will determine how farley died may not be complete
for weeks.
Farley's body was discovered yesterday in his luxury apartment in Chicago's
John Hancock center.
Police say there was no sign of foul play and no drugs were discovered in his
condominium.
But one published report says drug use may have been the reason he died.

Farley's offstage life of alcohol and drug abuse had been widely known thru
out his career.
But friends like Joyce Sloane, a long time producer from chicago's 2nd city
comedy troop, say there was another side to Farley.

Not only on the screen but off the screen as well. Belushi died at the same
age from a drug overdose.

UVa all-american safety Anthony Poindexter was voted the state's player of
the year today by a panel of college sports information directors from around
the Commonwealth.
And he is one of six UVa players on the all-state team.

Poindexter was also voted the state's top player earlier this month by
winning the Dudley Award.
The former Jefferson Forest standout was a first team Sporting News
all-american and all-ACC selection.
He had four interceptions this year despite being hampered with knee and
ankle problems all season long.

Hampton University's Joe Taylor was named the coach of the year.
Virginia Tech placed the most players on the all-state team with 8
selections, including former Fieldale-Collinsville star Kerwin Hairston.

Virginia Tech's opponent in the New Year's Day Gator Bowl, the University of
North Carolina, will be without one of its players for the game.
Reserve defensive tackle Ricco McCain was kicked off the team indefinitely
today, but the other six players facing assault charges stemming from a
December 5th brawl in Chapel Hill will be allowed to play in the game.

The UNC administration decided not to take action against the other six
players because the individuals adamantly deny taking part in the assault, and
the university's own investigation backs up their claims.

There was some good news for the UNC football team today.
Carl Torbush, North Carolina's new head football coach, was given a five-year
contract.
The deal will pay him a base salary of $135 thousand a season.
That's about $30 thousand dollars a year LESS than his predecessor, Mack
Brown made.

The Olympic torch began its long journey to the (NOG-a-no) Nagano Winter
Games today.

The flame was lit during an elaborate ceremony on the site where the ancient
Olympic games began in 776 B-C.
Heavy clouds prevented organizers from using the sun to start the fire.
Once lit the flame was transferred to a runner who'll be the first in a long
chain to carry it across Greece and Japan for the Winter Games in February.
