One of Roanoke's first black police officers was laid to rest today.
As David Johnson reports, Carl Theodore Ody (OH-DEE) helped lay the
foundation for those who came after him.

On Monday, he lost a year-long bout with colon cancer.
He was memorialized, with friends, family and those he inspired in their
childhood, among those attending his funeral.

Two years removed from serving in the Marine Corps, Ody was one of the first
five African-American officers hired in 1948.
He helped integrate the department during a time when it wasn't the most
popular thing to do.

Ody left a legacy which will long be remembered.

Ody is the fourth of Roanoke's original five black officers to die. The
fifth, Woodrow Gaither, is living in Connecticut.

Nearly two weeks after walking off the job, Hoover Color union employees
have reached a contract agreement with the corporation.
The workers will return to work Monday morning, after meeting the company
half way on issues including retirement, wages and insurance.
Union officials say the biggest thorn in the employees side was the
company's absenteeism policy.

It was a rough wake-up call for some central Florida residents this
More than 40 mobile homes were smashed when a tornado ripped through Polk
and Osceola Counties.
One resident said he knew something was happening when oranges started
smashing through his bedroom window.
Several families are homeless and staying in an emergency shelter.
No one was seriously hurt.
In 1997, the United States came close to breaking a 42-year old record for
the execution of murderers.
Last year 74 of about 32-hundred inmates sentenced to death were executed.
That's the highest number of executions since 1955 when 76 death row inmates
were put to death.
Texas ranked first among states this year, as far as executions, with 37.
It was a big year for Internet sales... but not big enough to make a
significant dent in traditional holiday shopping methods.

The Highlanders of Glenvar had their hands full tonight as they went up
against the Colonels of William Fleming in the NationsBank Holiday tournament.

While on their way to the beach two fisherman came across a squid that
measured 16 and a half feet.
The 300 pound sea creature normally makes its home in the Atlantic Ocean but
sometimes -- as in this case--drifts out towards the Mediterranean Sea.
But, this giant creature will be safe from the frying pan. It'll be kept
and preserved so tourists can view it.
