On Monday, he lost a year-long bout with colon cancer.
He was memorialized, with friends, family and those he inspired in their
childhood, among those attending his funeral.

Two years removed from serving in the Marine Corps, Ody was one of the first
five African-American officers hired in 1948.
He helped integrate the department during a time when it wasn't the most
popular thing to do.

Ody left a legacy which will long be remembered.

Ody is the fourth of Roanoke's original five black officers to die. The
fifth, Woodrow Gaither, is living in Connecticut.

A tractor-trailer left idling in a Salem driveway caught fire this morning.
Fire officials say an estimated 40-thousand dollars damage was done when
this truck was left running.

Investigators say no one was injured in the blaze, which took about two or
three minutes to put it out.
A short circuit in the truck's electrical system caused the fire.

Construction work is light for the last week in December..
Repairs continue on the Route 83 bridge over the McClure River in Dickenson
County. Traffic is squeezed down to a couple of lanes.

Last night in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu Virginia committed 27
turnovers in an 80 to 65 loss to Nebraska.
Nebraska came from seven points down at the half to beat the Cavaliers.

William Fleming advanced with a win over Glenvar while Cave Spring beat the
