United Airlines says the seat belt sign was ON when severe turbulence struck a jumbo jetliner over the Pacific Ocean.
Passengers on the Japan-to-Hawaii flight report the sign was off.

Sudden turbulence hit flight 8-2-6 sending it plunging one-thousand feet towards the ocean late last night.
One woman was killed and 102 passengers were injured.
The plane returned immediately to Tokyo following the incident.
Passengers say the turbulence was so violent it sent unbuckled people flying headfirst into the top of the plane.
Japan Airlines said nine of its flights passed the same area around the same time but none experienced turbulence. The National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, D.C. is conducting an investigation.
