Virginia highway officials will soon be using satellites to help them clear
snow from the roads.
The Virginia Department of Transportation has equipped 80 snowplows in
northern Virginia this winter with satellite navigation technology.
The experiment will tell highway supervisors in Fairfax County where the
plows are and what they're doing.

South Boston police say one man is dead after shooting at police officers
and setting his apartment on fire.
It happened about 1:30 this morning. Officials say police did not return
fire.
The man apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
His identity has not been released yet.
No one else were hurt, but at least three police vehicles were damaged by
gunshots.
One apartment was gutted by the fire.

offer to plead guilty.
Today's "New York Times" states the unabomber suspect made the offer in
hopes of avoiding the death penalty, but that federal officials turned him
down.
The jury has already been seated in Kaczynski's trial which gets underway
next week in Sacramento.

Homicides in the nation's two biggest cities are on the decline.
In Los Angeles police reported 577 murders in 19-97, the city's lowest
number since 19-77.
And it looks like New York City ends the year with the fewest number of
murders since 19-67.
The figure is 756.
In 19-92 that number peaked at 22-hundred.
Police say the sharp drop can be credited to expanded efforts to
stop drug trafficking.

A Goodview man was shot while sitting in his car at a Northwest Roanoke
intersection last night.

Avenue.
Police say 35 year- old Timothy Richardson was stopped at a traffic light,
when a man standing by the passenger side of the car started shooting.
Police say at least nine shots were fired.
Richardson was hit in the side and the leg, his condition has not been
released.
The suspect is described as a young man wearing black jeans and a black
coat, with a neat haircut and dark complexion.
