McCane is the subject of a state police investigation in the possible embezzlement of sheriff's department funds.
In a news release tonight, McCane said he is resigning January 15th over publicity about his personal life.
McCane says he doesn't want the situation to have a negative impact on the department.

In October a friend of McCane's estranged wife filed stalking charges against the deputy.
That case is scheduled to be heard in next month.

Lynchburg police are on the scene this hour of another armed robbery.
About 10 tonight a black male armed with a silver handgun entered the Harbor Inn Seafood restaurant on Old Forrest Road and demanded money.
No was injured.
Police have blocked off Old Forest Road as they search for the suspect.
This was the city's 21st armed robbery in recent months.

Orville Lynne Majors was wearing shackles and a bullet proof vest as he was led to an Indiana court room today.
He's accused of murdering six patients on the job as a nurse at Vermillion County Hospital.
According to court records: investigators found an epidemic of deaths in the intensive care unit at the hospital between 1991 and 1996.
They noticed that: "one particular employee was uniquely and strongly associated with the deaths in the epidemic"
During Majors' tenure at the hospital, the death rate in the intensive care unit nearly quadrupled.
Marjorie Doran said her father-in-law withered away under Lynne Majors' care.

The British-owned Merchant Patriot began to sink when flooding got out of control after a water pipe ruptured in the engine room.
The crew had to jump ship amidst 20-foot waves, so the Coast Guard could pluck the sailors from the water.
Crew members got into the water- -one at a time- -because the vessel was pitching so violently the helicopter couldn't get close enough.
The vessel was headed for Savannah, Georgia.

A man fell from the Seattle Space Needle tonight.

He'd been installing fireworks on the structure when he fell 100 feet and landed on a steel beam.
Eyewitnesses said an elevator must have knocked him off the ledge where he'd been working.
Others said he may have hit the elevator during his fall.
He wound up clinging to the beam with a safety cable about 120 feet above the ground.
Rescue workers removed him from the beam and took him to Harborview Medical Center with head injuires and a broken left leg.

The moment of turbulence over the Pacific Ocean Sunday night lasted only a matter of SECONDS... and the jetliner dropped LESS THAN ONE HUNDRED FEET.
The jolt WAS incredibly severe.
The flight data recorder...analyzed today by N-T-S-B crash experts....shows the jetliner hit its first bump of rough air at 31-thousand feet... then rose slightly.
Then it was slammed almost straight down by wind shear. It dropped about a hundred feet in ONE SECOND.
Flight 826 was then briefly rocked again... before it flew out of the turbulence. The whole thing was over in less than seven SECONDS.

Wisconsin Representative James Sensenbrenner picked a winner ticket in the District of Columbia lottery worth 250-thousand dollars.

He won the prize December 18th, but didn't realize it for nearly two weeks.

Virginia Tech will go through a light practice later this morning in Jacksonville in preparation for the Gator Bowl.
The Hokies expect flanker Shawn Scales to be back in the lineup and head coach Frank Beamer said yesterday that Al Clark will start the game on Thursday.

Woods posted five wins on the tour, including the Masters by a record 12 shots and he set the P-G-A tour single season money record with more than 2 million Dollars.

Paiement announced earlier this month his plans to resign at the end of this season.
He says the club has a couple of resumes on the table, but also says there has not been an intensive search for a new GM due to the holidays.
The front office has until April to complete that process.
Paiement says the Express is looking for someone who can help the team's numbers continue to grow.
