An interesting forecast that features a bitter cold night followed by a
twenty degree warmup by Friday.
The total now stands at 22... the number of un-solved armed robberies in
central Virginia in the past few months.
The latest one occurred last night when a masked gunman entered the Harbor
Inn on Old Forest Road in Lynchburg and demanded money.
The suspect took cash from two employees before fleeing out a back door.
A SWAT team and more than a dozen police officers responded within minutes
but could not catch him.
And this morning, in the parking lot of the Plaza Shopping Center, a gunman
robbed a Revco store employee and fled with a small amount of money.
Investigators don't believe these latest two crimes are connected with the

The EPA is still investigating a dump site discovered at the Roanoke Public
Works Service Center.
43 barrels containing something like paint and tar were un-earthed.
The Environmental Protection Agency is still investigating the site.
An E-P-A investigator says the results will be turned over to the U-S
Attorney's office- -standard procedure for all EPA investigations.
City officials are waiting for an analysis of the material in the drums.

his longtime chief deputy, George McMillan.

Sheriff-Elect George McMillan... and prepared to leave the department he has
lead for twenty years.

When Hudson "started over here" in 1977 he already had 28 years experience
in local law enforcement.

Since then, the city has built a new jail, and expanded it.
The number of inmates has grown from 162 when Hudson took over, to an
average of 750 today.
And Hudson says he is proud of the professional staff he has assembled.
But don't expect a quiet retirement. Hudson is considering a run for
another elective office, and says he will announce his intentions early in the

The second in command at the Bedford County sheriff's department is stepping
down amidst a flurry of controversy.
Administrative lieutenant John McCane submitted his resignation yesterday.
It takes effect January 15th.
State police currently are looking into whether McCane misused sheriff's
He's also been charged with stalking a friend of his estranged wife.
In his resignation, McCane stated he did not want the adverse publicity
about his personal life to affect the sheriff's department.

In case you didn't know, tomorrow is not just the start of a new year.
It's the first day of "Southwest- Virginia- is- Open- for- Business Month."
It was all Governor George Allen's idea.

Evan has a conventional wheelchair, but he's dependant on others to push

The "power chair" will be his in time for his trip out West.

At 35-hundred dollars a seat, even Make-a-Wish- -working with the N-F-L-
-has, so far, come up with only two tickets to the game.
There is thing that excites Evan even more than an all-expense paid trip to
San Diego for a week during the Super Bowl....
He hopes "Luke" will come to live with him. The 1-year old service
dog-in-training will make life a lot easier.
