The latest one occurred last night when a masked gunman entered the Harbor
Inn on Old Forest Road in Lynchburg and demanded money.
The suspect took cash from two employees before fleeing out a back door.
A SWAT team and more than a dozen police officers responded within minutes
but could not catch him.

And this morning, in the parking lot of the Plaza Shopping Center, a gunman
robbed a Revco store employee and fled with a small amount of money.
Investigators don't believe these latest two crimes are connected with the

Alvin Hudson is stepping down after twenty years, and handing the reins to
his longtime chief deputy, George McMillan.
But tonight, Joe Dashiell reports, Hudson may not be disappearing from the

The number of inmates has grown from 162 when Hudson took over, to an
average of 750 today.
And Hudson says he is proud of the professional staff he has assembled.
But don't expect a quiet retirement. Hudson is considering a run for
another elective office, and says he will announce his intentions early in the
new year.

down amidst a flurry of controversy.

Administrative lieutenant John McCane submitted his resignation yesterday.
It takes effect January 15th.
State police currently are looking into whether McCane misused sheriff's
department funds.
He's also been charged with stalking a friend of his estranged wife.
In his resignation, McCane stated he did not want the adverse publicity
about his personal life to affect the sheriff's department.
Sheriff Mike Brown, McCane's brother- in- law, could "not" be reached for
comment.

It was all Governor George Allen's idea.
He thought it would be nice to spend January celebrating Southwest Virginia's
economic virtues.
So the Governor hung a banner on the capital building yesterday.
He even went up in a crane and signed it, urging folks to come on down to our
part of the Commonwealth for a visit.
But we can only hope there wasn't too much symbolism in yesterday's ceremony.
Minutes after the Governor declared Southwest Virginia Open for Business,
workers went up in the same crane and ripped down the banner.
Apparently, for today at least, Southwest Virginia is CLOSED.
