The second in command at the Bedford County sheriff's department is on his
Lieutenant John McCane will step down as of January 15th, according to a
McCane currently is the subject of a state police investigation into the
possible embezzlement of sheriff's department funds.
He also has been charged with stalking a friend of his estranged wife.
McCane stated in his resignation that he did not want the negative publicity
about his personal life to reflect badly on the department.
Bedford sheriff Mike Brown is on vacation and could not immediately be
reached for comment.
No one was hurt in the latest in a string of armed robberies in Lynchburg.
Just before ten, a masked gunman entered the Harbor Inn Seafood restaurant
on Old Forest Road and demanded money.
Police at first were concerned the suspect was holding employees hostage.
A SWAT team was called in to search the building but the gunman apparently
fled without any money.

A metal detector was all two boys needed to find a piece of history in
Micheal and Andrew Zimmerman discovered a mortar shell from the Civil War
near a soccer field.
They called police who detonated it.
The blast left a large crater.
A Civil War historian says the shell was probably left over from the Battle
of First Kernstown.
Police are searching to see if there are more mortar shells in the area.
