The fire broke out around nine, at a house on Fairystone Highway in the Bassett section of the county.
Heavy smoke was coming from the building when firefighters arrived.
Officials found two men inside the house and tried to revive them, but both died.
The victims were 68-year-old James Privette, the owner of the house; and a friend, 40-year-old Banks Tunstall.
Authorities believe the cause of the fire was careless smoking.

Tech would self-destruct again as the offensive line breaks down and the Heels break up the handoff at the goal line. Greg Ellis recovers the ball in the endzone. Carolina leads it 22-to-nothing at halftime.
