The Kennedy family is preparing to lay to rest another one
of its own.
Liz Mullen reports from Hyannis Port, Massachusetts where the family spoke
briefly with reporters this afternoon.

((At the end of a quiet cul de sac, the homes dotting the kennedy compound are
filled with food, flowers and sorrow, as the family that's no stranger to
sadness prepares to bury another loved one.

Thirty nine yer old Michael Kennedy died on new year's eve in a skiing
accident on a holiday in aspen, colorado. kennedy was playing a makeshift game
of football while skiing down this slope when he crashed into a tree. though
family members and paramedics tried to revive him, he died almost two hours
later. michael kennedy had three children and a wife of 16 years from whom he
had recently seperated.

The medical examiner says comedian Chris Farley died of an accidental
overdose of cocaine and morphine.
It's similar to the drug combination of cocaine and heroin that killed
Farley's idol, fellow comedian John Belushi, in 1982.
The medical examiner also says Farley's liver showed signs of excessive
drinking and there was a narrowing of the arteries supplying the heart
muscle... a contributing factor in the death of the former Saturday Night Live
His body was found on the floor of his Chicago apartment two weeks ago.
The defense began putting on evidence today designed to convince a federal
jury to spare Terry Nichols' life.
Nichols was convicted last week of IN-voluntary manslaughter as a
co-conspirator in the Oklahoma City bombing.
His wife- -seen here on the right- -was the lead witness.
Marife Nichols described greeting cards Nichols has made for family
members out of file folders and toothpaste in prison.
She says she and Nicole, along with two-year old son Christian spend time
with Nichols at the prison every week.
Nichols plays with the children and even changes diapers, she said.
Nearly 760-workers at the General Electric plant in Salem are taking a forced
vacation for the next couple of weeks.
G-E calls it a temporary "production shutdown."
The company says it's not unusual.
Once a year it closes shop for a couple of weeks and re-evaluates its work
This year the shutdown is earlier because of weak earnings.
Some employees say they've heard rumors layoffs are on the way after the
shutdown ends January 17th.
But the president of the workers' union said he has NOT heard anything from
the company indicating people are about to lose their jobs.
Governor- elect Jim Gilmore's biggest individual donor loves a good mystery.
She writes one too.
But Richmond crime novelist Patricia Cornwell's keeping it a mystery as to
why she gave 150- thousand dollars to Gilmore's campaign -- almost twice what
the next biggest donor gave.
She's granting NO interviews.

Starting January 19th, airbag switches can be installed in vehicles.
But motorists have to meet certain federal government requirements in order
to get them.

According to the regulations, you may have the on-off switch installed if
you have a medical condition, have to place rear- facing infant seats on the
front passenger side, or are unable to adjust your seat at least 10 inches from
the air bag.

Applications for on- off switch installation are at Triple- A offices.
They haven't even graduated from high school but some Blacksburg students
are already familiar with courtroom etiquette.
The Blacksburg High school students recently showed off their skills during
a mock trial-- complete with a sitting judge.
Attorneys with the Virginia Bar Association and local bar of the New River
Valley helped the students prepare for their big day.
The mock trial was the case of an alleged drunk driver.
Students acted as witnesses, prosecutor and defense attorneys.

hospitals in Salem and Blacksburg after all.

The president of Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem --Bill Downey--says all
four hospitals will stay in the same division.
The four share marketing and some management services.
Columbia H-C-A had told the hospitals in mid-November
that a restructuring plan called for the Pulaski and Alleghany hospitals to be
But Downey and his counterparts told Columbia's management in Nashville,
Tennessee, they did not want to be split up.
The restructuring plan announced in November calls for 100 hospitals to be
sold over the next 18 months to shrink the company by about a third.

Steve Fossett has been in the air two days, and he is already half way
across the Atlantic on his balloon, "Solo Spirit."
