The checks arrived Friday, but Martin refuses to speculate why they weren't
delivered before now.

The League of Older Americans says a new payment system could be responsible
for some other people not getting their benefits check.
Those checks aren't lost, they're being delivered on a different schedule.

The 35- year old Dickenson County man who allegedly tortured and killed his
four year old stepdaughter will have his case heard in the New River Valley.
The trial was moved to Montgomery County because of extreme publicity in far

Kenneth Jessie pleaded NOT guilty to first degree murder and child abuse.
The charges stem from the death of his four year old step-daughter-- Annie
Authorities say the little girl was beaten, burned, bound and gagged in her
Dickenson County home, last May, possibly as punishment for bedwetting.
It took court officials several hours to seat a jury.
The potential jurors were asked questions such as how many children they
have and their thoughts on parenting.
But most importantly prosecutors and the defense tried to decipher their
feelings on child abuse.
Several potential jurors were actually excused early on-- saying they could
NOT handle such a sensitive issue.
Jessie's wife, Elizabeth, was also in court.
She pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and second degree murder.
Her attorney says she MAY testify against her husband.

The former second in command at the Bedford County sheriff's department
cleared ONE legal hurdle today when a prosecutor decided "not" to pursue a
stalking charge against him.
Special prosecutor Fred King says there wasn't enough evidence to convict
John McCane of stalking Tammy (GIN-ter) Ginther.
Ginther is a friend of McCane's estranged wife. McCane says (GIN-ter)
Ginther used her influence as a dispatcher for the Lynchburg police department
to have the warrant sworn out.

(A-KILL-uh) Aquillia Barnette is getting underway in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It's been a year and a half since his girlfriend was gunned down in the
street outside her home on Loudon Avenue in Roanoke.
Barnette is being tried in FEDERAL court in North Carolina for that crime
AS WELL AS the murder of a Charlotte man the same day.
Court records indicate Barnette confessed to both offenses.
Prosecutors plan to portray Barnette as a violent man who has been involved
in several crimes. They will ask the jury for a death sentence.
Robin Williams mother, Bertha will tell the jury how she watched in horror
as her daughter was shot to death.
A fiery crash kills two in Houston-
and backed up traffic on Interstate 10.
The empty tractor trailer slammed into a concrete highway divider and burst
Both occupants of the tractor trailer were killed and traffic was snarled
in both directions on the highway.
Houston police don't know what caused the crash.

Kaczinsky's been arguing with his lawyers for months, in part because he does

The owner of a Danville bookstore is in serious condition after he was shot

Police say a man shot storekeeper Fred Bevill twice at his Christian

Bevill is listed in serious, but stable condition at the Danville Regional

A local Democrat wants to change the system that makes it lucrative for
lawmakers to accept appointments from the governor.
Under current law, members of the General Assembly who accept full-time
positions in the governor's administration can roll over their years of
PART-TIME legislative service into a big pension when they retire.

American Electric Power is lining up support for the proposed high voltage
power line that would stretch from Wyoming, West Virginia to Cloverdale.
And today, they added Roanoke City Council to the list of local governments
endorsing the project.
The utility must win approval for the line from state regulators in Virginia
and West Virginia, and from the National Forest Service.
Today, members of Roanoke City Council voted unanimously to endorse the
Mayor David Bowers said he believes the project is vital to economic
development in the valley.
