The trial of alleged Unabomber Ted Kaczynski is on hold this afternoon.
Just as it was about to get underway this morning Kaczynski requested to make a statement.
The defendant, his lawyers and the judge then adjourned into a private meeting.
Last month, Kaczynski met twice with the judge in an effort to fire his lawyers, during a dispute over whether they would argue that he is insane.
Jonathan Freed has more on the start of his trial.

The government believes Kaczynski is the mastermind behind a string of some 16 bomb attacks since the late 1970's...killing three, and injuring many more. Two of the deaths happened a decade apart, here in Sacramento...the third in New Jersey.
This case is expected to last several months. Kaczynski's cabin, a centerpiece of evidence, was trucked in from backwoods Montana...so the jury will be able to see first-hand where the former math professor turned hermit is alleged to have orchestrated his campaign of terror.
Throughout the jury-selection process, Kaczynski has often been at odds with his lawyers. He didn't like their idea of claiming he has mental problems. So no psychiatric experts will take the stand...at least, not in the first part of the trial.
