Authorities now say Sonny Bono died instantly when he hit a tree in South
The Sheriff says the death was accidental- a result of head injuries.

the trail ... after the mountain was closed for the day.

sonny had cher and america had them both back in the seventies...
but their marriage did not last... and after the couple broke up, cher pursued
a solo career in music and film. she appeared visibly upset-- cutting short a
trip to london.
sonny bono was one of few entertainers to successfully walk out of hollywood's
limelight and into the political arena... first becoming mayor of palm springs
california.... and later being elected to the house of representatives...

The Virginia General Assembly's first stab at campaign finance reform has
skewered the Republicans.
A NEWS 7 investigation into party caucus fundraisers has prompted the Joint
Republican Caucus to cancel a questionable fundraiser... and go back to the
calendar to try to reschedule.

First of all, what's the law that prompted the cancellation?
Jean, the new law just took effect in July.
It makes it illegal for General Assembly members, statewide officials, or
their aides to solicit funds DURING the legislative session that starts next
The staff members of the party caucuses technically can -- but the caucus
bosses are the lawmakers themselves.

Because of our inquiries for this story, the Republican Caucus has cancelled
its February fundraiser
and will throw out the invitations already printed.
What about the Democrats -- are they guilt-free?

THEIR fundraiser is on the day before the session begins -- next Tuesday.

One day after stalking charges against him were dropped, former Bedford
County sheriff's lieutenant John McCane has been indicted for misuse of public
A grand jury handed up the indictment after hearing evidence from a state
McCane allegedly misused the sheriff's department money that was being paid
to drug informants.
Special prosecutor Joel Branscom says the total amount was less than one
No trial date has been set.
Annie Leftwich's life did NOT resemble that of most little girls.
Dickenson County prosecutors say the four year old lived in filth and was
Her step-father Kenneth Jessie is on trial for murder in Montgomery County
because of extensive pretrial publicity in far Southwest Virginia.
An autopsy revealed Annie Leftwich's body was covered with scrapes and
Prosecutors believe the day she died, the girl was tied to her bed as

A Sheriff's investigator testified that the child's bed was kept in a small

Yesterday, Annie's mother, Elizabeth Jessie, pleaded guilty to second degree
A co-star of the movie "Forrest Gump" has been arrested- accused of
stalking his ex-wife and stabbing her friend.
Police say (MY-kul-tee) Mykelti Williamson followed his ex-wife when she left
home- took her keys and let himself into her home.
Police say Williamson stabbed the woman's male friend several times in the
stomach. He's in critical condition.
Williamson apparently ran away-- police caught up with him three miles
Bail was set at 180 thousand dollars-
Williamson played Forrest Gump's shrimping buddy- Bubba. His other movies
include Waiting to Exhale and Heat.
There's a lot going on at the Salem Museum where it is moving ahead with

A new study says breast fed babies develop into smarter children.
The report followed one-thousand children and found that breast-feeding
infants leads to higher I-Q's, standardized tests and better grades than those

The New Zealand study theorizes that fatty acids found in breast milk aid in
neuro-development and lead to improved mental abilities.
Critics question whether the children are smarter because of the breast milk
or because the mothers are older, better educated and wealthier.

its Spring Late Model Stock Car race, the Miller 300.
Construction on the front stretch where the speedway is adding 75 hundred new
seats won't be finished in time for the March 15th race.
Also, keep in mind that the Fall Taco Bell 300 has also been moved.
The race was originally set for October 18th, but now it wil be held on
Sunday September 20th.
The high flying VMI Keydets basketball team return to action tonight at
Cameron Hall for a seven o'clock game with the Southern Conference's newest
member - UNC Greensboro.
The Keydets are coming in redhot, having four of their last five including a
victory over Virginia Tech on New Year's Eve.

The Radford Highlanders haven't been nearly as hot as VMI this season, but
last night they did return home for the first time since December 1st and slam
dunk visiting Tusculum College from Tennessee.
Eric Parker scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds for the Highlanders,
who put four players in double figures, including Leslie Ballard who passes to
Corey Reed for the layin. Ballard had 13 and Reed scored a dozen.
Senior Kevin Robinson led the Highlanders attack with a career high 25
points and 13 rebounds.

digit scorers with 11.
The Highlanders win it by 11 and now hit the road on Thursday for a

The Virginia women's team, which was ranked ninth in the nation entering last
night's game with Clemson failed to grab the Tigers by the tail.
In fact, Clemson Natasha Anderson had the Hoos by the throat most of the

Virginia got 19 points from Demya Walker
but Clemson wins it 74-to-67 to drop UVa to 10-and-2.

but President Clinton's latest task may be more difficult.
This time he's trying to make peace between the first pets.
The President was returning to the White House with First pooch- Buddy when
they encountered Socks the Cat.
Buddy wanted to play with Socks but the First Cat would have none of that.
The president tried to persuade Socks that the dog wasn't so bad, but Socks
wasn't buying it.
The President said despite today's encounter, progress between the two
really is being made.
