The Dickenson County man charged with killing his four year old stepdaughter
escaped a first degree murder conviction.
But Kenneth Jessie still faces 50-years in prison.
This afternoon-- the jury found the 35-year old man guilty of child abuse

Teresa Hamilton reports-- the jury's decision came down after listening to
intense closing arguments.

Those were some of the sentiments shared by Kenneth Jessie's attorney as she
tried to convince jurors to convict her client ONLY of child abuse-- NOT first

To do so--Nancy Dickenson attempted to place the blame on Jessie's wife---
saying it was Elizabeth who killed four year old Annie by placing a gag inside
her mouth.
The child, who was severely beaten, suffocated to death last spring, after
she was tied to her bed, inside the family's Dickenson County mobile.

The commonwealth concedes the little girl could've gagged to death-- but
during closing arguments put a slightly different spin on the story-- one that
placed even more of the blame on the child's stepfather.
Prosecutors say Kenneth Jessie was the one who tied Annie to her urine soaked
bed in such a way-- the position of her body-- was enough to suffocate her--
even without a gag.

The jury recommended the maximum 50- year sentence.
The same sentence facing Jessie's wife.
